Know any good rides in NW Connecticut? There are many and I'm always looking for more. Let's post them on this site and see what we can come up with. Post yours as a comment here and after looking it over I'll transfer it to the main page. Make sure to include your screen name or email address so you can be credited for your post.

Litchfield-CoveredBridge Loop

From RT202 in Litchfield head west. Turn right on RT341. Bear right onto Rt45 in Warren. Turn right onto RT7 and take it through Housatonic Meadows State Park bearing right onto RT128 across the covered bridge in West Cornwall. As you cross over the bridge there is a cafe on the right which is a good rest stop. Continue on RT128 to Goshen. Turn right onto RT63 back to Litchfield.

Norfolk Loop

From the intersection of RT44 and RT272, take RT272 north into MA. There's a great little cafe on your left after you get into MA. Continue across the metal grate bridge and bear to the right upto RT57. Take a right onto RT57 and then quickly bear right onto RT183. Go through the state forest and after you're back in CT take a right onto RT182 (Colebrook). RT 182 will take you back to RT44. Make a right onto RT44 and you'll be back in Norfolk.

Barkhamsted Reservoir Loop

From RT202 in Nepaug (between Canton and Torrington) begin on RT 219. Continue across RT44 (in Pine Meadow) through the twisties. Turn left onto RT318 for a beautiful view of the reservoir (and plenty of room to stop). Continue on RT318 and turn right onto RT 181 which will take you through Peoples State Forest. In Hartland turn left onto RT20 which will take you into Riverton. As you go through the center of Riverton go over the small bridge which crosses the river and make an immediate left onto River Road (not well marked, but across from the furniture factory). Take River Road to the 4-way stop at RT318. Make a left onto RT318, cross the steel bridge and follow RT318 back through the reservoir, making a right back onto RT219. Follow RT219 back to the start at RT202.

Torrington-Sharon Loop

From RT4 in Torrington head west to Sharon. In Sharon turn right onto RT41. In Lakeville turn right onto RT44 to Norfolk. In Norfolk take RT272 South back to RT4 in West Torrington.

Avon to Norfolk (the long way)

While it's easy to get from Avon to Norfolk heading West on Rt 44 (about 45 min), you can also head North into Mass. for a very scenic tour.

From Rt. 44 in Avon head North on 10/202 through Simsbury and into Granby. Take Rt 189 North in Granby (turning left off of 10/202 and then a quick right onto 189N) to Granville MA. Turn left onto Rt 57 and head west. As you approach Otis you will see a huge sign for a steep grade. Take this sign seriously as the hill is steep with some great turns. At the bottom of the hill there is a stop sign as you turn right, cross Rt 8 and zig-zag to a steel bridge staying on Rt 57. A few miles up, Rt 57 makes a sharp turn to the right (go slowly here). Continue on through the small towns until you get to West Marlboro where you'll turn left onto 272 and connect with the Norfolk loop trip going in the opposite direction and heading towards Norfolk (see that trip for more details). You'll see a small sign to Canaan after you pass the cafe, which is another great side trip if you want to do some more exploring and eventually wind up further away in Canaan on Rt 44.

If you don't take the Canaan road, stay straight on 272 into Norfolk and you will again be on Rt 44, where you can go straight and head back to Avon or stay on 272 to Torrington (making a left on Rt 4 when you get to Torrington).
